How to actually use The Detox Kit

The standard advice for cutting screen time is to set timers, delete apps, turn on focus mode, charge your phone in another room. All of this is correct. Almost none of it works for the people who need it most, because all of it requires the same thing: making a decision, repeatedly, about not using your phone.

Why willpower runs out

Each individual choice not to pick up your phone is small. A few seconds of mild discomfort, a small win for the part of you that wanted to read instead. The problem is the volume. People average somewhere between 80 and 120 phone pickups per day. Even if each decision costs you 0.5 percent of your daily willpower, by 8pm you are tired and the phone is still right there, and the YouTube algorithm is good.

Physical friction works because you do not have to choose

Once the phone is in a locked box, the decision has already been made. There is no ongoing choice. You are not exerting willpower not to pick up your phone, because picking up your phone is not currently an available action. The box has already made the choice.

This is why apps that block other apps do not work for long. The app you are using to block apps can be turned off. The choice to not turn it off is still being made many times per day. Physical objects do not work this way. They cannot be argued with from inside the same situation.

Two patterns that work

Pattern 1: The Box during deep work

Put the phone in the Box, set the four-digit code, and loop the steel cable through something fixed, a radiator pipe, a desk leg. Work on the thing you said you would work on. When you want the phone back, you have to dial the code and unthread the cable. That small friction is enough.

If you are skeptical, the first session is the test. Most people experience the first 30 minutes as mildly uncomfortable. Most people experience the next 60 as the most focused they have been in months. This is not the Box. This is your attention restoring itself.

Pattern 2: The Pouch at meals and social settings

The Pouch is for when you cannot lock the phone away entirely because you are not at home. You go to dinner with someone. You take the pouch. The phone goes in when you sit down. The phone comes out when you leave.

This sounds like a small change. In practice it is the difference between a meal where you both checked your phones every five minutes, and a meal where you talked.

What to expect

The first week is uncomfortable. You will reach for your phone many times without realising. This is not a personal failing. This is how strong the habit is.

The second week is easier. By the end of week three, most people find they are picking up the phone less even when it is available, because the habit has loosened.

If after a month none of this works for you, the returns policy exists for a reason. Send everything back. We refund.

If after a month it works, it works.
